Shamima has been involved for many years in the Muslim Youth Movement. In 1993 she was
elected Chairperson of the Transvaal Region of the MYM and was thus became the second
woman ever to become a member of its National Executive. She was the most vocal in the
organisation on women's rights issues.
Al-Qalam, Southern Africa's
Muslim Newspaper
Shamima was involved with al-Qalam in various capacities from 1989. In 1996 she was
appointed Managing Editor of the paper. Under Shamima al-Qalam was the flagship of
Progressive Islam in South Africa.
The Voice on 95.4 FM
Shamima was a founder of the Muslim Community Broadcasting Trust and was Chairperson of
the Trust from its formation till her death three years later. The MCBT owns The Voice, a
Muslim community radio station in Johannesburg. Shamima co-hosted two shows on The Voice:
"Lifting the Veil" - a show on women's position in Islam and "Our
Voices" - a talk show that dealt with a range of controversial issues.
